We purchased this years ago from a young couple who were selling off her grandpa’s things. What got my attention was when the young father told his young son firmly, “Son, you don’t need to be looking at that.” as he removed the small pine wood box from the boy’s hand. And he was right, in my opinion. The lower part of the 3 5/8” by 7/8” by just under 1” box was hollowed out as if it were a “coffin” of sorts. The carved arched lid (about 3 5/8” by just under 1” by ¼” at the highest ridge of the dome) is attached at the back with 2 crude leather “hinges”, each held by 3 way-too-big tacks.
